Play is an experience we all know one that can bring us laughter and perhaps at times bring us tears.

This Carousel Mobile piece is a collaboration between Justin Alan Volpe and myself for this group show. Inspired by the dream of riding on toys based on 80′s toyetic cartoons.

A carousel is a child’s delight and an adults as well.  Can you imagine riding these through the waves or round and round on a merry-go-round? Someday…

These have been in my mind for awhile but I finally got to make them for the group show Soft* at myplasticheart.  These are the first in what I hope to be a series of carousel pieces.

The Barob B is an aristocrat, who loves fine things.  With his luxurious neck ruff, he is dashing in red.  Baron B has an armature and is gently poseable.  He was part of the  group show Soft* at myplasticheart.

The pirate bunny and the saber tiger trophies were in the group show Soft* at myplasticheart.

Here be a sweet lamb ram, a one eyed exotic deer and a jackalope.

Do not be sad for them, these are humane trophies.

This sweet guy is based on a rocking horse.  He gently rocks himself to and fro. Slow Rocker was part of the group show Soft* at myplasticheart.

The first Tortoise and the Hares were made for the group show Soft* at myplasticheart. I grew up reading Aesop’s fables and so I have strong memories of those stories. Here’s my interpretation of this classic fable.

Slow and steady wins this race.  Tortoise always gets the gold even if those crafty rabbits upgrade to wheels!

This Tortoise is a custom for Miss C. He is smaller than the original Tortoise and sports glasses and a protruding heart.

Soft* : A Plush Art Show featuring a line-up of 6 artists (Steff Bomb, Danita, Kelly Denato, Heidi Kenney, Amanda Spayd, Mariangela Tan) and their contributions to the world of plush art.

Show dates: March 18 to April 3, 2011

The tradition of plush toys has a long history dating back to ancient rag dolls, turn of the century teddy bears and even taxidermy. Regarded as *comfort objects* these hand-made pieces are typically sewn from cloth or other textiles and stuffed with plush material. Contemporary approaches to this medium have elevated conventional plush toys from mere playthings to elaborate mix-media sculptures.

Through this unified art form each artist has put forth a small collection showcasing their own distinct styles.
